A money calculator for Australian cash
This free money calculator adds up Australian notes and coins for you. Enter how many of each you have and the total appears in dollars and cents, so it also works as a quick cash counter or till counter at closing time. Cafes, market stalls, clubs and anyone with a coin jar can use it, on a phone or computer.
Balancing the till at close
- Count every note and coin in the drawer, starting with the $50s and $20s.
- Enter the numbers here to get the till total.
- Take away your float. What remains should match your cash sales.
Say the till holds 2 × $50, 6 × $20, 8 × $10 and 9 × $5, plus $32.25 in coins. That is $377.25. With a $200 float, your cash sales should be $177.25.
Why a till can be a few cents out
Australia withdrew 1c and 2c coins in 1992, so cash payments are rounded to the nearest 5 cents. A $18.42 total is paid as $18.40, and $18.43 as $18.45. Card payments are not rounded, so small differences between sales and cash are normal.
| Total ends in | Cash amount ends in |
|---|---|
| 1 or 2 cents | 0 (rounds down) |
| 3 or 4 cents | 5 (rounds up) |
| 6 or 7 cents | 5 (rounds down) |
| 8 or 9 cents | 0 (rounds up) |
Notes and coins on this calculator
You can enter $100, $50, $20, $10 and $5 notes, and $2, $1, 50c, 20c, 10c and 5c coins. Older notes still count at face value, because the Reserve Bank says all its previously issued notes remain legal tender. To add coin rolls or bags, multiply first and enter the number of coins.
Type a number or tap + and −, and hold a button to change it quickly. Full view lets you tap a picture as you count, and Hide empty shows only what you have used. There is no sign-up, your numbers stay on your device, and they clear when you reload. The total covers cash you have counted, so it cannot check for counterfeit notes.

Frequently asked questions
Is this money calculator free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no account or download.
How does cash rounding work in Australia?
Cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5 cents. Totals ending in 1, 2, 8 or 9 cents round to 0, and totals ending in 3, 4, 6 or 7 cents round to 5.
Does it include 1c and 2c coins?
No. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1992, so the smallest coin here is 5c.
What is a till float?
A float is the cash left in the till at the start of a shift so staff can give change. Take it away from the till total to find your cash sales.
Are my numbers stored?
No. The total is worked out in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Reloading the page resets it.
